WORK on a new and improved countryside centre in Worcester has begun.

The refurbishment of the centre at Worcester Woods Country Park was planned in response to surveys and rising visitor numbers.

The development will include a new reception, shaded areas for picnickers and a larger caf and kitchen.

The site is managed by Worcestershire County Council and has been designed to be economic, with an innovative wood-fuelled boiler, a grass roof, and insulation made from recycled newspaper. A special garden of local species of flowers is also promised.

Andy Maginnis, the council's countryside estates manager, said: "The centre is a victim of its own success.

"It was built more than 20 years ago and it was envisaged to receive up to 100,000 visitors, whereas we now have in excess of 500,000.

"Until January, it will be business as usual, but then for three months the caf, toilets and meeting room will close."

The work is being paid for by contributions from the county council, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Liveability Fund, the Environment Agency, and the Heritage Lottery Fund. It is due to finish next March.
