CAN any of your readers explain why extensive flailing of hedgerows has started in August and is still continuing?
Traditionally this necessary task was not undertaken until the winter months, after birds, mammals and insects had taken the opportunity to feed on the bountiful harvest of nuts, berries and sloes.
With forecasts of a hard winter ahead, the need to preserve natural food supplies for wildlife has never been greater.
