HAVING narrowly lost a thrilling encounter with Luctonians' seconds the previous week, Malvern's seconds got back to winning ways at Spring Lane last Saturday.

MALVERN II 34pts, LEAMINGTON II 10pts

They edged out an aggressive and competitive Leamington by six tries to one.

The home side's front row had an unfamiliar look with Pete Sharpe and Tony Seymour joining hooker Paul Stevenson. Both had excellent games and with locks Vince Hill and Eddie Edwards in the engine room, Malvern's tight five established a good measure of control over the large, well-drilled visiting pack.

Early exchanges saw Malvern's attacking intentions thwarted by their own haste, and when forced to defend, their over-0eagerness resulted in the award of a penalty for offside, which the visitors knocked over from 20 yards to open the scoring.

With the home pack serving up plenty of ball, scrum-half Dave Green cleverly released wing Barney Bamford, his blistering blindside run took him clear to score his first try of the season.

A powerful Malvern attack again saw Green give winger Will Clee the chance to use his pace, he sprinted to the corner to double the host's tally. Under further pressure, Leamington infringed. Longley's kick to touch gave the home side good field position, and when the line-out became a ruck, number 8 Lee Varney picked from the base before crashing over to give out-half Adam Dixon a straight-forward conversion and his side a 17-3 lead at the break.

The second period continued with both packs competing ferociously, but when the elegant Andy Longley joined the line, Leaming-ton's defence was breached again as Clee benefited from his well-timed pass to score his second try.

Malvern's youthful flanker Stuart Clark and Liam Maloney hustled an harried the visitors in midfield, forcing the turnover from which centre Dave Beech profited, receiving a neat pop-pass before cruising through to score under the posts, Dixon adding the extras. Then an excellent passing move saw Beech score again in the corner.

With the clock running down and with a comfortable 34-3 lead, the hosts allowed their concentration to slip. Leamington instantly took advantage as their flanker and winger linked well to score a fine consolation seven-pointer.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Malvern seconds home to Kenilworth (3pm).
