ALMOST a third of households in Worcester will soon be taking delivery of their new wheelie bins.

The bins, which will be used for alternate weekly collections of recycling and refuse, are to be introduced throughout the city over the next two years.

Residents in selected areas, including Lower Wick, parts of St Peter's, Rainbow Hill, Ronkswood, Tolladine, Astwood, Blackpole and Warndon, as well as some areas off Bromwich Road and Bilford Road, will be the first to take part in the new scheme.

Each household will receive two wheeled bins - a large 240-litre bin for recyclable materials and a smaller 190 litre bin for all other refuse.

John Bond, the city council's environmental protection officer said: "The delivery of wheelie bins will start towards the end of October.

"These householders will be given an instruction booklet at the same time as their new bins arrive with help and advice on how the scheme will work."

"A small number of householders who lack the space for two bins will either remain on the existing coloured sack collection method or will be placed on a mixture of bins and sacks.

"All residents will eventually change over to alternate weekly collections however; this means that the collection crews will remove refuse in week one and recyclables the following week. This will make more effective use of our vehicles and collectors and help us to reach our recycling targets."
