KIDDERMINSTER Chess Club secretary Maurice Bissell took on opponents from all over the country at Hereford's weekend congress.
Playing in the open event, he managed to draw four and lose only one game.
Tournament controller Tim Yates is inviting entries for the 2005/06 Shuttle Sheild competition.
The shield was donated by Kidderminster Shuttle in 1950 and is open to all chess enthusiasts in the Wyre Forest area who are not necessarily members of Kidderminster Chess Club.
The closing date for entries is October 6. The first round will be staged at Habberley Social Club on October 13.
Yates can be contacted on 01562 66201.
