JIM Stote asks the question - does anybody pay any attention to anything anymore? (Letters, Tuesday, September 13).

The headlines in the Worcester News on Monday, September 12 read: "Police ignore one-way system." Is this the answer?

Do people follow examples set by people in authority? Let's look around us. When is a double yellow line not a double yellow line? When does an amber light not mean stop? When does a red light not mean stop? When is a one-way street not a one-way street?

What is a yellow box junction for? When is a pedestrian zone not a pedestrian zone? When is a bus only lane not a bus only lane? What is a taxi rank? What is a speed limit? Why do we have to try our brakes when approaching speed cameras? What is an alcohol-free zone? What, is a residents only parking zone? What is a disabled only parking zone?

I think it is a sign of the times that nobody takes any notice of signs anymore. We can walk around the city, anytime any day and find these laws and bylaws being broken. But with all the politically correct red tape involved in bringing these more trivial offences to court, the powers to be choose to ignore the fact that every day they are being broken in a big way.

DEN SMITH,

Worcester.
