A PROPOSAL by a voluntary organisation for a plant nursery on part of Sanders Park in Bromsgrove is set to be thrown out.
Greenscope, a county council organisation offering horticultural opportunities for adults with learning disabilities, currently operates from a former grounds maintenance depot off Stourbridge Road.
Plans have been sent to Bromsgrove District Council, which owns the park, seeking permission for it to relocate to a site near the scout and guide huts. The plans include a single storey workshop, a shop and polytunnels
But yesterday (Tuesday) the portfolio holder for leisure on the district council, Councillor June Griffiths (Con-Alvechurch) stated her total opposition to the scheme.
"As landlords I am not interested in giving permission for anything in the park other than sport or recreation activities and certainly not for a commercial enterprise," she said.
Greenscope says it wants to move because its current site is inadequate and cannot be readily seen by the public. Our Bromsgrove, a group dedicated to keeping a watchful eye on development on open spaces within the town, claims the plan is contrary to the wishes of the Misses Sanders who bequeathed the land to the council half a century ago for a park.
Member Sue Haswell said: "I have nothing against Greenscope personally, but to allow development of this sort in the park, which is a treasure to be cherished, could open the floodgates and set a dangerous precedent for future applications."
The county council was asked to comment, but had not done so as we went to press. The closing date for objections is tomorrow (Thursday).
