produce and handicraft show on Monday welcomed more entrants than usual this year, contributing to the wonderful display for the 150 visitors and helpers to view. There were 22 vegetable and fruit classes from which Mrs G Rochfort's dessert apples were judged to be best single exhibit. The 23 cut flower classes included chrysanthemums, roses, annuals and perennials as well as hosta leaves, pot plants and Mr L Devereux's dahlias judged best in show.
There were 47 entries for the floral art classes, which had two innovative challenges for arrangements, one to be displayed within a picture frame and another for a 25th anniversary celebration using only grey foliage and white flowers. There were also classes for miniatures, grasses displayed in gift bags and one to depict autumn. The preserves and cookery section included 12 lemon drizzle cakes, tarts, pate, relish, flapjacks as well as jams, fruit jelly and marmalade. The handicraft section showed patchwork and needlework, greetings cards, paintings and photographs all to a high standard. There was also a display of embroidered squares with garden themes which are to be assembled to form a banner to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the club this November.
During the afternoon tea was available, and there was a produce table stocked with cakes, preserves and fresh produce all supplied by members, as well as plant stalls and a raffle.
