WHY do so many Bromsgrovians spell the abbreviated form of mother the
American way, 'mom,' and pronounce it the English way, 'mum'?
It is particularly puzzling among those who were old enough to read during World War Two when security posters were spread countrywide bearing the message 'Be like dad, keep mum' (not mom).
