WHEN I first moved to Droitwich Spa almost 15 years ago the one feature that stood out above all others in terms of untapped potential was the canal system.
I was impressed by the outline plans to re-open the two canals and could immediately see the commercial potential of a marina filled with residential and stop-over canal barges in the manner of Gas Street Basin Birmingham, of boats moored along its length, of shops, pubs, restaurants and such like alongside the canal in our town and possibly a smaller development in a strategic 'out-of-town' location.
However, my enthusiasm was dampened when my wife pointed out that nothing of note had taken place with regards to its restoration since the canal was restored in the Vines Park area in the early 1980s.
Over the past 15 years I have seen periodic reports in your newspaper of money being promised and progress being made and yet, on the face of it, nothing appears to have altered much over this period of time.
Yet in this timescale several similar projects in other towns have been completed and their communities have reaped the benefits.
Could someone please explain to me when all the talk will stop and the work will begin?
