WEST Mercia Constabulary, which covers Worcestershire, has appointed assistant chief constable Ian Arundale its new deputy chief constable.
Mr Arundale, who is chairman of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) Firearms Working Group and has overseen the recent introduction of the Taser electrical device into England and Wales, said: "I am delighted to be able to continue my career with West Mercia Constabulary.
"I look forward to continuing to work with members of the police authority and constabulary and our partners to further improve the quality of life for those who live and work in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Worcestershire."
Mr Arundale joined South Wales Police in 1980 and was appointed West Mercia's assistant chief constable in November 2000.
He has a masters degree in criminology and criminal justice, a bachelors degree in police studies and a post-graduate diploma in applied criminology.
Paul Deneen, West Mercia Police Authority chairman, said: "We are very pleased Ian Arundale has been appointed as deputy chief constable following a rigorous and exhaustive selection procedure."
The vacancy arose following the retirement of deputy chief constable Alan Bridge.
