ONE of the most pleasing aspects of Worcester City's FA Cup victory over Falmouth Town on Saturday was the appearance of Carl Heeley as a spectator.
It was the first time Heeley had ventured outside his home since being released from hospital, having suffering horrific facial injuries after being kicked in the face during the cup tie at Mangotsfield.
But he had vowed to be present to cheer on his team-mates in the next round, and City's 3-1 win provided another cause for celebration on what was his 29th birthday.
Heeley said: ''I am feeling a lot better and every day there is an improvement.
''The wiring in my jaw has to stay in for another two or three weeks, but the five plates will have to stay in my face permanently so I might have a problem with metal detectors when I go away on holiday,'' he joked.
He says it is too soon to say when he will be playing again.
''I'm definitely aiming for this season but, at the moment, it is a little bit of a mystery as to when. I have to be led by the experts.''
Heeley says he appreciated the welcome given to him by City fans on Saturday, as well as all the messages he received during his convalescence.
''The letters, get-well cards and phone calls from City fans and everyone connected with the club have been really appreciated. It really gives you a big lift when everyone is supporting you and I can't thank them enough.''
Heeley's main hope for the moment is to see City get into the first round of the FA Cup -- they entertain Langney Sports in the fourth qualifying round on Saturday, October 31.
''I am very disappointed not to be able to play, but I would love nothing more than for them to have a good cup run -- they deserve it. But we have to get to the third or fourth round so I might be able to play!''
City set off on another Wembley trail on Saturday when they have a tricky home tie against Ryman League Premier Division high-flyers Billericay Town in the first round of the FA Umbro Trophy.
If a replay is required, it will be at Billericay's New Lodge ground next Tuesday.
Wednesday, October 21.
