A RUGBY player was scarred for life when a broken bottle was jabbed into his face, Worcester Crown Court was told.

The attack by 22-year-old Jason Knight could have blinded his victim, Judge Michael Mott warned.

Knight was jailed for five years yesterday after admitting wounding with intent.

Judge Mott also ordered him to be put under supervision for three years after release from his sentence.

The victim, Steve Hamblin, had been playing for Pershore RFC at Ludlow on February 12 and called at Todds wine bar in Worcester on the way home, said Glyn Samuel, prosecuting.

He became involved in an argument with another man and they began fighting in the street.

While Mr Hamblin was held in a head- lock, Knight picked up a bottle from the gutter, broke it on the kerb and pushed it into his face three or four times.

One witness said there was "a big lump of flesh" hanging from Mr Hamblin's cheek. Another said the sight of all the blood made him feel sick.

Knight, of Beaumont Walk, Droitwich Road, Worcester, denied involvement when he was arrested but Mr Hamblin's blood was found on his clothing.

Judge Mott criticised police for allowing Knight, who had no apparent injury, to wash blood off his hands when he was first taken to the police station.

"I think it is quite disgraceful," he said. "I think somebody should have a word with the officer concerned."

Peter Arnold, defending, said Knight had accepted his guilt and written to the victim expressing his regrets.

He had difficulty in controlling himself after taking drink and drugs.

The judge described it as "a terrible offence" which could easily have blinded Mr Hamblin.
