GARY Barnett says ambition is the chief reason behind his move to Kidderminster Harriers as Jan Molby's right-hand man.

Barnett, aged 36, has managed Barry Town to four successive League of Wales titles and regular appearances in European competitions.

But he said: "It was the ambition to get back into the Football League. It is a big target but it is one that is certainly achievable.

"I realise that the Conference is a very tough league - it is down to us to make sure we are up there.

Barnett was familiar with Molby when he was in charge at Swansea. "Obviously the first ambition is to learn from Jan - when I heard speculation that he might be bringing me in as number two I was very flattered. Working with somebody who was a fantastic player is going to be a real privilege."

The Stratford-born former Fulham, Oxford, Huddersfield, Wimbledon and Leyton Orient midfielder, who also played one match for Worcester City, is poised to sign a two-year full-time contract.

He said it was a big wrench to leave Barry.

"I had some great times and have got some tremendous memories. Success is a lovely thing - it makes you feel good in everyday life - but probably the time was right for me to move on."

Barnett has also signed on as a player and believes he is more than capable of doing a job in the Nationwide Confer-ence. "There are a lot of games at any level of football, and you have to have a first-team squad that are all capable of doing a job at some time in the season."

Barnett could feature in tomorrow's friendly at Halesowen Town (3.0), but former Ilkeston Town striker Ian Robinson will not after Molby decided to terminate his trial period.

Molby said: "He has been involved in all three games and he is a good player - he just wasn't quite what we were looking for."
