A game of very few chances was settled in the 39th minute when the visitors' leading scorer Simon Dixon headed home an inswinging corner.
Defences were generally on top throughout.
Half chances for Darren Tafft, Simon Judge and Sean Cotterill were Town's best first-half efforts.
After the break the game became more scrappy with a series of fouls - seven players were yellow-carded in all.
For Town John Wade and Chris Thomas shot over the bar, while at the other end Mick Lowe made a crucial goal-line clearance.
