I WAS interested to read county councillors expressing their satisfaction at the rise in their allowances.

More than two years ago a number of us expressed concerns over incineration as a method of waste disposal for the county and the lack of consultation in the decision process.

We have attended numerous meetings with councillors and a variety of "independent" experts and still not seen a copy of the county contract.

Those county councillors now claiming to be worth a massive increase would perhaps like to reflect on their past efforts.

Had they been prepared to listen to fears expressed about this proposal, or looked at research already available suggesting this was not an environmentally friendly option, then perhaps we would not now be facing the prospect of a huge health hazard on our doorstep.

This county council failed to write its own waste plan, failed to consult the electorate adequately and did not do its homework properly.

How fortunate for them that unlike many in the real world of work their allowances are not related to performance.
