Spencer Edwards finished a creditable 14th at the opening Ericsson Midlands PGA Order of Merit event at Forest Pines, Scunthorpe.
The 30-year-old Abbey Hotel golf professional collected valuable points as he chases a top three spot from the four tournaments, which make up the Order of Merit.
He finished the three-day competition nine shots off the pace with a four over par total of 223.
His challenge started miserably with two bogeys on the opening two holes of the competition but by the end of the round he made the cut, shooting level par.
But two disappointing days because of his putting and the conditions saw him unable to compete with the main challengers.
Edwards, though, was not downhearted having beaten the majority of the 120-field.
He said: "It's quite respectable given the number of players involved and I am not disappointed by any means.
"The field was quite close together and a bit more accuracy with my putter could have placed me in the top five, as there was only three shots difference."
Edwards' next target is the qualifying rounds of the Open, at St Andrew's.
