IT comes as no surprise that Peter Luff MP is proposing a "Middle Way" on the hunting issue ("Bid to form body to licence hunting with dogs" Evening News, Tuesday, August 8).

Having abandoned the people of Worcester who voted for him in the 1992 General Election (including me), to take on the safe Tory seat of Mid-Worcestershire, he is pursuing a "lets try and keep everyone happy" approach to this issue.

He states that "at least as many foxes will die if hunting is banned".

This completely misses the point.

Letters in the Evening News from Ms Knittel, Mr Brett and others all refer to hunting with dogs as being cruel.

This is the crux of the argument against hunting - that it is barbaric and outdated.

As hunts seem unable to control their own members - as seen by the feeding of foxes by a hunt shown on the BBC's Newsnight programme - how could an independent body?

Mr Luff's desire to appeal to as many people as possible may have worked when he abandoned the constituency of Worcester, but it will not work with regard to hunting with dogs.

At least Worcester's current MP, Mike Foster, is prepared to stand up and be counted for what he believes in.

C R ELLIOTT,

Worcester.
