AFTER what happened last season, Worcester City fans would be wise not to get carried away with rash predictions this time.

Graham Allner's side were predicted to sweep all before them by the bookies and many City fans.

But they made a disastrous start, Allner departed and although they revived under new man John Barton, they still only finished four places and three points clear of the drop zone in the Dr Martens League Premier Division.

City will feel confident of improving considerably on last season's 15th place, and after some astute signings, they could even make the top six.

But it's asking a lot to be transformed into a side capable of challenging for the title, and City may have to wait a year or two longer yet.

A lot will depend on how they come through a testing start, with a tough opener at Tamworth followed by a visit from always dangerous Bath City.

Barton's new signings have certainly impressed so far although striker Micky Cotter has yet to receive his baptism through injury.

The two new wide men, Mike Wyatt and Ian Reed, have arguably impressed most and better service from the flanks is something City have been crying out for over the years.

The real key is whether Cotter can become the perfect foil for striker Mark Owen, as City's top scorer really needs a player he can feed off, effective as his partnership with the hard-working Steve Lutz has been.

Danny McDonnell should be a commanding presence in goal although new full-back Andy Bradley is still finding his feet, while Nathan Jukes could make the left-back slot his own after some impressive displays late last season.

City should be solid in the centre of defence providing double player of the year Martin Weir and Mark Tucker stay fit. Carl Heeley is a very dependable back-up although he has also operated well at right-back in the friendlies, while skipper Chris Greenman is also not far off a return.

Paul Carty came into his own when he finally slotted into his favoured central midfield role last season, while Ian Cottrill is an effective partner for him.

City's highlight of last season saw them reach the last 16 of the FA Trophy for the first time since 1982, having beaten Conference side Hayes on the way.

Perhaps this year may see City shine in the FA Cup again, having missed out on the first round at Forest Green's expense last season.
