CHILDREN in Stratford who have witnessed traumatic crimes, accidents or domestic incidents will be offered a comforting teddy bear, thanks to keen local knitters.

Stratford police have joined up with the Teddies for Tragedies scheme, which uses cuddly toys home-made by volunteers to give to youngsters who have seen upsetting scenes.

The bears not only help the little ones ease their tears, but also make it easier for police to talk to them, making incidents quicker and less painful to deal with.

Joan Hodges is the local charity co-ordinator and has issued an appeal to local craftspeople to come forward with more of the tots' toys.

She said: "These teddies are sent all over the world, helping children cheer up and give them hope.

"We thought it would be a good idea for our local police to carry them in their cars to give to young children at the scene of incidents."

Stratford community bobby and new town beadle, PC Nick Stephens, is also a fan of the scheme. He said: "We hope these teddies will give comfort and solace to young children and in turn, make it easier for officers to deal with the incident."
