A COUNTY family had a lucky escape when a young child playing with a cigarette lighter set fire to his bedroom.
Twelve firefighters from Bromsgrove's Blue Watch tackled the first-floor blaze shortly after 2.30pm yesterday.
Leading firefighter John Wiggan said that two colleagues wearing breathing apparatus doused the fire, which was "well alight" when crews arrived.
The firefighters also rescued a kitten called Bubbles from the smoke-logged first floor.
The blaze in Cobnall Road, Catshill severely damaged the first floor of the terraced home.
The family had managed to flee the burning house before firefighters reached the scene.
"It was started by a four-year-old boy playing with a lighter, which set fire to the bedding and toys," said Mr Wiggan.
"The fire caused a lot of smoke damage to the whole of the first floor and a small amount of water damage to the ground floor. It was quite a severe fire."
