FAMILY and friends of a fanatical Manchester United fan from Malvern donned their favourite football strips for his funeral on Tuesday.

The widow of David Day, who died, aged 57, asked mourners to wear their favourite football team's shirts and colours "with pride" instead of black as a final send-off for the United supporter.

And his ashes will be scattered at the Old Trafford stadium next week in accordance with his wishes.

Mr Day, of Coppice Close, died on Saturday, August 5 having never regained consciousness from a brain haemorrhage that he suffered three months ago.

Edwina Day said he was an avid fan of the game and had supported the "Red Devils" all his life.

"He was born in Malvern and had no connections with Manchester but he supported them because they play such exciting football," she said.

She said lots of people came to the funeral dressed in their kits.

"There were quite a lot of different football strips there and I was really glad to see that," she said.

From the age of 15 Mr Day worked at the Morgan Factory and as a mark of respect the factory closed on Tuesday afternoon allowing all the employees to attend the service.

Peter Morgan, chairman of the company, gave a special tribute at his funeral.

"It was a really nice tribute, they're going to miss him, we all are. He was a lovely man who called a spade a spade. He didn't suffer fools gladly, I'm going to miss him desperately," she said.

Mr Day leaves a daughter, Alison, and a granddaughter, 10-year-old Stephanie.

"They had a very special relationship," said Mrs Day.
