AS part of Welland Juniors strategy of developing links within major football league clubs - and promoting individual opportunities for its young players - a special Welland Juniors U16 "invitation" squad will visit the JJB stadium on Tuesday, August 22, including a match against Wigan Athletics' own rising stars.

Narrowly beaten in the U15 Mercian Boys Cup Final at the Langland Stadium last season, Welland will be facing the youth team from Wigan who, under manager John Benson, almost clinched a first division spot, being beaten at Wembley by Gillingham in extra time.

Mr Dave Whelan, chairman of Wigan Athletic and JJB Sports, said he was delighted to entertain Welland whilst John Benson, now General Manager and Technical Director, hopes the day will develop into an annual "friendly" giving him the opportunity to 'talent spot' any of our upcoming youngsters in the future.

The squad will watch the 1st team training, followed by a tour of the JJB stadium, lunch and an afternoon kick off.

Manager Garry Thackeray said: "At this young age boys should be enjoying their football and playing in as many matches as possible. Stronger relationships with league clubs gives some lads a genuine opportunity to 'shine' amongst the elite whilst providing a memorable day out for the others."

Welland Juniors still have vacancies for their teams from U12 to U16 level with training on Saturday mornings and matches in the Mercia Boys League on Sunday afternoons.
