THE Worcestershire Golf Club ladies section recently held their annual club championship which was played over 36 holes off scratch.

The new ladies champion is Cath Francis with an excellent gross 83 in the morning and 79 in the afternoon. Ten ladies completed the 36 holes and notable scores were Ursula Pearson second with a total of 171 exactly equalling her title-winning score from last year. Also Heather Morgan who was unsure whether she could complete 36 holes, returned to her former standard with a creditable gross 85 in the afternoon. The day was well organised and well supported for the Scratch Silver Cup, which was also won by Cath Francis with runner up Ursula Pearson. The Bronze Scratch Cup winner was Liz Bird with gross 96 on count back from Janet Long.

The Division One medal winner, held on the same day, was Sheila Evans playing off a handicap of 20. She came in with a nett 71. Sheila, also as ladies competition secretary, had the unenviable and time consuming task of sorting out all the cards, payment and results. Division Two medal winner was Val Burton with a nett 70, two under her handicap and runner-up Jacqueline Tanner with 71.

The ladies section is through to the final of the Droitwich League. They will play Evesham GC, on September 21 at Sapey GC. The team won five matches, lost one and drew one to reach the final. The recent friendly match away at Droitwich resulted in a very substantial win to the Worcestershire ladies 5-2. Although the ladies have been very successful in their matches against other clubs, they again lost to the Worcestershire GC Juniors by two and a half to three and a half on Thursday August 3. This match was very competitive and enjoyed by all players.

On Tuesday August 8 the Past Captain's Teams Alliance annual competition was held. Most teams consisted of a past lady captain and two others and teams could either opt for 18 or 12 holes. At the lunch attended by 60 ladies the prizes were awarded to: winners of the senior ladies with 26 stableford points, Olive Gardener (past captain), Charlotte Braithwaite and Pauline Pharoah; winners of the longer competition with 50 stableford points the team of June Jones, Joan Haworth and Audrey Emery and second with 48 stableford points the team led by past captain Jean Coleman with Margaret Bellamy and Joss Douglas-Pennant.

The Ladies Open stableford competition was extremely well organised by Jill Exell and her many helpers, 143 ladies from 31 golf clubs enjoyed good golfing weather conditions, which produced some high scores.

The winner of the gross was Laura Day from Evesham with 30 points and the winner of the nett was the Worcestershire's Betty Mitchell with 42 points.

Other notable scores were Mary Horrobin, Pat Heathcote and Helen Landau all with 39 points, also Cath Francis on 37 and Jane Tromans 36. Heather Morgan managed to get two '2's.
