POLICE are appealing for witnesses today after a man was spotted wandering the streets of Worcester with what appeared to be a gun.
Officers were called yesterday after the man was seen in Farrier Street at 1.30pm. West Mercia's fast response unit was scrambled after the man was then reported heading over the River Severn's footbridge towards University College Worcester.
Two further sightings were reported, one after he was seen strolling along Hylton Road brandishing what witnesses described as a handgun.
A man was later arrested in Dines Green in connection with the incident.
"All reports involving firearms are treated very seriously and urgently by the police and our response was both positive and swift," said Chief Insp Ian Browning.
"On this occasion the weapon involved is an imitation.
"The man was first seen in Farrier Street from where he headed to an address in the Dines Green area of the city. He is reported to have crossed the river over the Sabrina Bridge and was later sighted by University College."
Chief Insp Browning said officers wanted to trace anyone who might have seen the man between 1.30pm and around 2.30pm.
"I'd appeal to anyone who witnessed any part of this incident, or who believes they have information, to contact us on 01905 723888 as soon as possible.
"If you have information but would prefer to remain anonymous, then I'd urge you to pass the information to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111."
