YOUNGSTERS looking for an exciting career were being given the chance to preview a life in firefighting this weekend.

Teenagers in Droitwich were being invited to attend the town's fire station to talk to a well-known firefighter.

David Monty Wild, who served for 39 years, was set to come out of retirement to pass his knowledge on to the new generation and to generate interest in a Young Firefighters Association.

The aim is to find up to 20 young people aged between 13 and 17, who want to learn vital skills which will develop their mind and help society.

"It's an exciting and fulfilling career," said Mr Wild. "We'll be teaching skills, which could lead to NVQs."

Mr Wild, who was retained sub officer, said the group will be fully supported by the Hereford and Worcester Fire Brigade as part of their commitment to offer youngsters the opportunity to benefit from involvement in the service.

"I had years of enjoyment and it's a great career," he added.

The formation of the Droitwich group follows the successful launch of the brigade's first group of Young Firefighters Association at Malvern earlier this year.

Membership is free, with all those accepted being offered a programme of activities including practical and theoretical instruction. There will be outdoor adventure training and activities, which will lead to the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Anyone interested was being invited to call today, between 11am and 1pm.

However, for those unable to attend there is still an opportunity to register before Friday, September 8, by calling Droitwich Fire Station on 771515.
