THE pressures of modern life have prompted a church group in Worcester to set up its own counselling service.

Bereavement, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, abuse and relationship problems are just some of the subjects tackled by The Bridge group which is based in Pump Street.

The confidential counselling group was formed in January by an affiliation of Christian churches, and is open to anyone who feels they need to talk about any "inner confusion".

"We have had a steady flow of people during the past seven months," said Martin Hodson, chairman of The Bridge management group.

"It's good news that we will soon have the capacity to help more people as 20 counsellors are due to complete their 18-month training so no one should be kept waiting," he said.

"We started the group as it became clear that there were a few people had deep emotional problems and needed help.

"There are a lot of people around who are hurting inside and so we decided to start this service for the community."

Mr Hodson said anyone with a problem could contact the group.

"We take people as we find them and welcome people from all backgrounds and beliefs," he said.

"All our counsellors are fully-trained but if they can't help, especially if the problem is specialist such as alcoholism, they will refer people to the right agency.

"If anyone needs our help all they have to do is telephone the office and make an appointment."

He said The Bridge's counsellors had not been recruited to offer advice, but instead to listen and "give those in need someone to talk to".

The Bridge is affiliated to the Association of Christian Counsellors and it works in accordance with their code of practice. Clients are charged £15 for each one hour session.
