RACING fan and Pitchcroft director Derek Prodger has bridled over attacks on the new course owners.

Arena Leisure was saddled with criticism after being overwhelmed with a record 4,600 visitors to its Friday meeting two weeks ago.

But Coun Derek Prodger has defended the owners.

One critic, St Peter's parish council member Christopher Catchpole, said scores of racegoers looking for refreshment had just one bar and a burger van to choose from.

He said people were willing to throw their money at bar staff but queues 10 deep prevented them from even reaching the bar.

Mr Catchpole said it was "appalling" and dubbed staff "inept".

David Roberts, of Arena Leisure, said the firm had been a victim of its own success but hoped to expand facilities as part of its £12m investment in the site.

Coun Prodger, Worcester City Council's representative director of Worcester Racecourse Limited, said it was unfair to criticise Arena Leisure.

"In just a short period of time they have taken some positive steps," he said.

"People have to remember that the council was running it up until March 2000.

"Since taking over, the race track itself has been improved with trainers and owners saying what a marvellous improvement there has been.

"There is also going to be a new £12m development subject to planning permission for a hotel and grandstand to cater for at least 5,000 visitors. It is going to be superb.

"In addition, there will be other facilities such as marquees, hospitality boxes plus food stalls.

"It takes time to get things working but we are getting things done and, although we are big enough to say there was a problem we aim to make improvements."
