FORGET Sydney in September, the Olympics has already happened for Droit-wich Spa and Bromsgrove youngsters when they competed at the BAA Millennium Youth Games grand finals in Southampton over the weekend.
Droitwich Spa High School's U14s girls' rugby team scooped a silver medal after being beaten 8-7 by Wales in the final.
Four pupils from the same school competed in Worcestershire's U13s boys' basketball squad and won a bronze following a semi-final loss to Cheshire.
The youngsters were part of the 100-strong county team.
Bromsgrove was represented in the U15 girls' football and U13 mixed swimming events.
The footballers beat Lancashire, Leicestershire, Hampshire and Kent and drew with Birmingham.
But they failed to qualify for the semi-finals.
The swimmers came sixth in their gala which was won by the eventual overall swimming champions, Greater Manchester.
The budding stars competed against 51 areas from across the UK and spent four days in an Olympic style village.
Bromsgrove District Council and Wychavon District Council helped to stage the Worcestershire Area Games in May and organise the teams for the grand finals.
Wychavon's youth sports development officer, Steve Brewster, said: "We can be very proud of all our teams."
Chairman of the Bromsgrove council's recreation and amenities committee Cllr Terri Matthews said: "It is tremendous they have performed so well on a national stage."
The £5m games was the biggest youth sport event in the world with 6,800 teenagers taking part over three days.
It was organised by Sport England.
