Sutton Coldfield Town (0) 0

Bromsgrove Rovers (1) 1

Dr Martens League Western Division

BROMSGROVE Rovers bounced back from their opening day defeat to take all three points in a hard fought game.

A 14th minute header from Mark Burrow was enough for victory as George Rooney's side survived periods of sustained pressure in the second half.

Sutton had much of the early possession with Neil Began curling a free kick just wide in the first ten minutes.

Rovers hit back to stun the home side. Burrow latched onto a Quentin Townsend through ball and forced a corner.

After clearing the corner, Town failed to pick up Burrow who headed home from inside the penalty area.

Chances were at a premium for the rest of the first half although Leon Mitchell missed a golden opportunity for Sutton on 34 minutes when he headed over the bar from close range. Rovers almost extended their lead on the stroke of half time when Peter Sutton unleashed a fierce drive which went inches wide.

Sutton increased the tempo in the second period and Rovers were forced to retreat.

Townsend had to clear off the line when Mitchell struck from just outside the box.

Rovers bounced back on 61 minutes when Burrow's shot went wide after a surging run.

Two minutes later, Mark Benbow hit the bar from distance.

Tempers flared when Martin Ruddick lunged in on Townsend and the Sutton midfielder received a yellow card for the challenge.

As the home side pushed for the equaliser, Rovers keeper Nore Gabbidon produced a fine one-handed save from Mitchell.

The Greens held out leaving their travelling fans happy.
