THE stage is set today to relocate Bromsgrove' s street theatre, which has become a victim of its own success.

As predicted in last week's Advertiser/Messenger, district council bosses have switched the venue for today's and next Wednesday's acts from the piazza in front of the Market Hall to the Recreation Ground.

Leisure chief Robbie Hazelhurst said they had come to the decision after listening to comments about traffic congestion caused by closing off part of St John Street, and the fact that acts have become so popular that the theatre had outgrown its present site.

"The all-day finale on August 30 traditionally attracts a huge audience which will be better accommodated on the Rec," he said.

"It will also be safer for children to be away from a busy road," he added.

Council staff will be out on Wednesday handing out flyers and directing the public to the new venue.

If the move proves successful the spacious Recreation Ground will be used for all next August's performances.

Tim Harris, managing director of Baylis furnishers and toy shop, in High Street, said: "I'm delighted on behalf of traders and harassed drivers that the council has agreed to a new location."
