RESIDENTS labelled "killjoys" for their opposition to a charity concert have dipped into their pockets to raise more than £100 for two good causes who missed out when it was cancelled.

Residents of Stanklyn Lane, Stone - who along with Wyre Forest district councillors were branded party-poopers by star attraction The Wurzels - have rallied round to collect £55 each for the County Air Ambulance and Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Cutnall Green Young Farmers had wanted to stage the open-air event for up to 1,500 revellers at Sparum Farm, Stanklyn Lane, last Friday.

But it was refused by Wyre Forest District Council which feared crime, litter and excessive noise.

It received objections from residents, who were represented at the licensing meeting by Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Arthur Wignall.

After the decision, Mr Wignall organised a collection among those who had objected and £110 was raised.

Mr Wignall said: "It was never our intention to be killjoys and we do not enjoy being labelled as such.

"We did not doubt the concert would have been staged properly and safely, but we did fear an unsavoury element being able to cause mischief both at the beginning and on leaving the event."
