FOR goodness sake Evesham. Stop! Stop! All this madness of moving the post office. I don't think I have ever heard such a daft idea.

Look back a few years and remember how it was when we had a departmental store in the High Street. One of the reasons it was closed was, they were unable to attain planning permission on a listed building for the staircase to be removed and a lift to replace it. So they closed down and what happened then? The town died on its feet.

Here we are in the year 2000 with a pedestrianised Bridge Street which is established, pleasant and well used. Also you now have a very nice shopping arcade which is beginning to buzz, having had tasteful tiling, seating, a lovely clock to look at and beautiful doors either end for security at night.

Having got this far you want to wreck the High Street by taking out the best post office for miles around.

I was well impressed with my last visit there. Speedy attention, very organised, every need attended to and information needed given. A ramp for the disabled, not to mention space for the vast number of people that visit each week.

I am just appalled that such a public amenity can be dispensed with almost overnight. Greed that is all it is, money, money, money.

It is convenient, this is the key point. Why else would they build sheltered accommodation next door if it was not central? The bus station is central, so is the railway station and the churches.

Can you imagine all these poor people, who live longer now, perhaps with bad eye-sight, stiff joints, toddlers being pushed and dragged all the way to the Co-op? When they get there, where will they house the numbers?

To my mind there is hardly enough room for the groceries. I think the Co-op should stop as a grocery business.

The people of Evesham should be listened to, they spend their lives in this town, they love their post office.

So do something about it people now before it is too late. Go to your councillors, that's what they're there for, to help you to make your voices heard and heard they must be. Or the High Street will fade into insignificance.
