IT may only be a tiny village but the people of Abberley are preparing to mark their millennium year celebrations in a big way.

For the benefit of its few hundred inhabitants, the Abberley 2000 team has spent two years organising a medieval fair which takes place next month.

Groups of people in and about the village, including Scouts, the primary school and Abberley Hall Private School, have joined forces to arrange a spectacular array of events for the occasion, which has been made possible by proceeds from village fund-raisers and the parish council.

Jousters, falconers, archers and minstrels will be on display and sheep races will also form part of the spectacle on Saturday, September 16, which is aimed at raising profits to provide new facilities for village youngsters.

A tug-of-war will be staged and playgroup children will be in fancy dress, and if the occasion becomes thirsty work for visitors they can sample a medieval ale house which will be manned by the village green committee.

The festivities will begin at a fund-raising barn dance and barbecue at the village hall on Friday, September 15.

The barbecue is being organised by the Abberley Primary School PTA and Megan Webb and her group, The Reel Alternative, will provide entertainment.

Abberley 2000 committee member Jill Smith said: "It will be marvellous to turn the clock back 600 years and we especially hope the children have a great time.

"However, once the occasion is over, we will see how much money was raised and decide how we can improve facilities for the youngsters here as this is a rural area not well served with transport links.

"Ideas at the moment include creating a cricket pitch or maybe a youth club depending on how much is raised."
