SIMON Andrews, the Wickhamford teenager, celebrated his 18th birthday in a week of torrential rain, the only thing he didn't see was snow!

It was, at times, a pure gamble at Knockhill as to what set up was put into both Unilock Construction Hondas.

During the first qualifying on Saturday's timed practice, the youngster put in his best time to date, although in 23rd position, this was some four seconds faster than last year, and he still felt there was a lot more to come.

Things were looking good for the second timed practice, but the weather had other ideas. Yes, it rained for a change! Well, that was it, and a sixth row start was achieved.

The team was disappointed, but thankful that their rider had got a qualifying time in.

Surprisingly, on Sunday, it rained yet again, but Andrews showed how good he is in the wet - 7th fastest, which made the paddock sit up and look!

It's unusual for a team to want rain, but rain had to be an advantage to Andrews, who has put in some of his best performances in the wet and is undaunted by poor conditions.

As race time approached, the track dried out enough for the wets to be removed from the bike.

Andrews made a great start, placing himself in the 18th spot after one lap, and then 17th by the next lap.

As the race opened up, he came in 16th place on a difficult, technical circuit, which was another solid performance by a young man coming of age.

The team now look forward to round nine at Cadwell Park on Bank Holiday Monday.
