AN angry crowd of protesters confronted county councillors on a site visit to a Worcester tip.
People who live next to the refuse site at Bilford Road staged a silent protest to coincide with the visit yesterday.
The Action Against Bilford Road Tip group was joined by several placard-waving residents from neighbouring roads to demonstrate their opposition to plans to extend the site's opening hours.
Site manager Severn Waste Services wants the tip to open on Sundays and to extend its daily opening hours from 4pm to 6pm.
Plans to install compacting equipment and surround the site with a steel fence have also angered residents.
City council planning officials agreed with the protesters in opposing some of the proposals, but it is the county council which will have the final say.
"They want to have workers on the site from 7.30am every day," said Action Group spokesman Helen McCabe.
"We already have too much traffic on Bilford Road. It might as well be an A road."
The group is also concerned about increased traffic affecting blind and partially-sighted residents of nearby Dickinson Court.
Alan Foster, area director of Severn Waste Services said residents' fears had been taken into account in the current planning application.
