THERE are those who believe that history and heritage are important in providing balance, perspective and a common sense of belonging.
How sad that our current New Labour Government doesn't share that view.
On January 1 2001, the United Kingdom celebrates its 200th anniversary, marking the Union of the then British and Irish Parliaments and the foundation of our modern state.
I use the word "celebrate", but in fact there is to be no official recognition by the Government to mark this occasion.
The French Republic proudly celebrated its 200th anniversary in 1989. Brazil- favoured holiday destination of Peter Mandelson - celebrates its 500th anniversary this year. Only in trendy, "cool" Britannia, it seems, are we embarrassed about our identity.
I believe that this will be a sadly missed occasion, and it demonstrates the Government's utter contempt for tradition, values and heritage.

Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate,
