BUS services have been the source of anger in cities for generations.
Will the bus start its journey on time? Will it arrive at its destination on time? Will there be a seat on it? Do I have the right change? These are the sort of questions which have haunted bus users - from teenagers to pensioners - for generations.
Nothing, it would seem, irritates people like a badly-run bus service.
In Worcester, on the vast majority of days, our buses run like clockwork. As in any complex organisation, there are bound to be snags but, mainly, there are reasonable explanations for them.
And that's just as well, because buses seem set to play an increasing part in the life of the Faithful City.
As we know, controversial bus lanes have been created in Worcester as part of the attempt to encourage commuters and shoppers to leave their cars at home.
It's clear that such a policy must include buses which run at regular intervals, keep closely to the timetable and be safe from thugs and vandals.
So it's worrying to consider that the delay in implementing the Worcester Quality Bus Partnership, which is intended to allow the vehicles to make faster journeys across the city, is having the effect of hitting people where it hurts - in the pocket.
The failure to deliver improved services has meant that First Midland Red has seen a fall in passenger numbers - one reason behind its increase in fares.
It's true that an average increase of 5p on a single journey may not seem much - particularly when some car parking charges in Worcester have recently risen by 10p an hour - but for pensioners who rely on the buses it is a considerable blow.
What the powers-that-be must not forget is that, alongside clean, efficient vehicles, falling fares are an essential part of a green transport strategy.
