THOUSANDS of people are expected to gather in the centre of Worcester next month for three races to celebrate the new millennium.
Worcester City Council has organised a 10km road race and intends to seal off Castle Street, Croft Road and Foregate Street for about 20 minutes.
Two other races - a 5km race for wheelchair users and a 3km "fun run" - are also planned on Sunday, September 17.
All three races will pass the Guildhall, Elgar's statue and the Cathedral.
"This is the first time the council has held an event of this sort and it's planned as a springboard for future races," said Alan Stuttard, the head of cultural services.
"We've planned it in conjunction with Worcester Athletics Club in the city and the races are certified by the Midland Counties Athletic Association."
About 600 runners have entered the 10k road race, while another 1,500 are due to take part in the fun run.
"It's the only race of its kind in the country run through an historic city," said Amanda Smith, the race organiser.
The road race is aimed at "serious" runners, who will get under way at 11.45am.
Around 24 wheelchair athletes are to set off at 10am, with the fun runners starting half an hour later.
Worcester City Council was bracing itself for around 2,500 spectators to turn up, he added.
The closing date for entries is Monday, September 11. Anyone wanting information can call the council on 01905 723471.
