THE first of 58 flats at a state-of-the-art housing scheme for the elderly was officially opened on Friday.
Chairman of Redditch Council's housing committee, Bill Hartnett, did the honours and opened a show flat at the £4 million South Street development.
The new scheme will eventually see residents enjoying the privacy of their own bedroom, bathroom and lounge with the reassurance that professional help is just outside their front door.
The development will be managed by the ExtraCare Charitable Trust, which provides activity-based care for the elderly.
A £600,000 appeal is now under way to pay for "motivational extras", such as a computer suite, gym, library and hair salon for the residents.
A programme of leisure pursuits will also be put in place.
