JAMES Sargant took his last curtain call as the Royal Shakespeare Company's director of touring this week.
He began working for the company in 1971 as production controller, but his career with the RSC has seen him work in London as Barbican administrator and in Stratford as administrator for special projects at the Swan Theatre and The Other Place.
His involvement and interest in touring began in the mid-70s and James' work has ensured that the RSC has been seen in more than 140 venues and in 30 different countries. At the end of 1981 James took over the Watermill Theatre, Newbury, with his wife, Jill.
"It has been a unique experience working for the RSC, helping the company's work to be seen throughout the UK and in all parts of the world," he said.
"I will now work with my wife, Jill, in the endless battle to keep the Watermill Theatre afloat, but I am also looking forward to anything else of interest that comes along - I certainly won't be idle!"
Carol MacKay, who has worked with the RSC since 1978, will take over as head of touring.
