UPTON Rowing Club turned out in force to support Ross in their Annual Veteran & Junior Regatta on Sunday, with at least ten veteran crews entering the various events.
With such a strong presence, it was inevitable that in several races Upton was drawn against Upton.
The first race of the day for Upton was scheduled for 9.35am, for Upton Women's B crew in the Novice Veteran Coxed 4's category, but unfortunately their opposition scratched so they rowed the course and the awaited their next race - against Upton Women's A crew. A good row was had by both crews, with Upton A crew winning by 1 lengths. Upton's Women's Novice C crew the had an excellent row, with a very tight finish, losing by a canvas to host club, Ross. In the final, Upton A crew composed of Pauline Mason, Sandy Barker, Carol Barkley and Angela Rodway and coxed by Anna Streather, beat their opponents from Ross Rowing Club to lose their Novice status, the second Upton Women's crew to achieve this in this regatta season.
There were further wins in the Veteran A and Veteran B/C categories for a composite crew from Bewdley, Upton and Evesham and a composite Evesham/Upton crew carried of the pots for the mixed event. Upton's B crew beat a crew from Mumbles and then it was bound to be an Upton crew to win as they were the only ones left in the category!
Upton's next regatta is at Worcester on September 10 and then, with their annual visit to Mumbles on Sept-ember 24, brings the season's end.
