WORCESTERSHIRE'S business leaders plan to confront the issue of the euro at a major debate held by the Institute of Directors.

The IoD claims its members in the region are still undecided about whether Britain should join the new currency.

And many company directors say they do not know enough about the pros and cons of membership.

Nigel Hastilow, area director of the IoD, said most surveys showed widespread concern.

"The euro is a burning issue for businesses, with strong opinions on either side," he said.

"But there is as much heat as light in the argument and we hope our debate will help to inform business leaders of the real arguments on either side.

"Of course, it's something many people feel passionate about, and the debate should be lively.

"But we do believe that, by gathering together some of the region's most influential business leaders, there will be the chance to go beyond the raw emotions and discuss the issue in detail."

Speakers are due to include John Pratt, vice-president of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, and Michael Brinton, chairman of Kidderminster carpet firm Brintons.

The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 25, at Pinsent Curtis in Birmingham.
