DRIVERS are parking "indiscriminately" in Droit-wich Spa because they are aware the town does not have traffic warden, it has been claimed.

Droitwich Spa Town councillor John Cook (Lab, Droit.West) told the Advertiser he has received numerous complaints about motorists flouting parking restrictions.

He wants a Spa traffic warden to clamp down on drivers parking in disabled spaces and on double yellow lines.

Cllr Cook said: "People park indiscriminately, knowing they can get away with it because there is no-one to enforce the law.

"Disabled residents have problems accessing the shops because able-bodied drivers use their parking spaces."

"Larger buses are also finding it increasingly difficult to negotiate the town centre because of cars parked on the side of the road."

He added: "This is a problem which needs to be dealt with sooner rather than later."

Sgt Jerry Gregory, of West Mercia Constabulary, said: "In the last two years we have increasingly focused on responding to emergency situations and dealing with crime and disorder.

"With the decriminalisation of parking restrictions on the horizon we cannot justify diverting additional resources in this area."

Sgt Gregory added: "However, with much of our policing we are driven by demand.

"If Cllr Cook is keen for us to enforce parking regulations there is no reason why traffic wardens employed across south Worcestershire cannot be deployed to Droitwich Spa."
