THIRTY-THREE juniors with age ranges from six to 18 took part in the Evesham Junior Championships held last Sunday and some fine scores were recorded in all competitions.
The prestigious Jim Tattersall trophy for 18 holes for boys was hotly contested and won by 12-year-old Jack Williams who recorded his best score of the year with a gross 83.
Only last week he had taken third best net at the Tewkesbury Park Open. Runner-up last weekend was Darran Law (92).
In the girls' competition the winner was another 12-year-old, Kirsty Law who had a gross 88.
She has had a marvellous run of wins over the summer with success at the Broadway, Malvern and Tewkesbury Park Opens.
Runner-up was Zara Green (95).
Two new trophies were donated this year for the best net scores. Men's captain Mike Whiteford gave his cup for the girls - won by Trudie Law (73) and professional Dan Cummins gave his for the boys which 13-year-old Ben Tattersall's score of 62 was good enough to win.
In the nine-hole competition (under 14) there was a new winner with Mark Everett recording a brilliant net 33. Runner-up was David Williams (36).
The best score over nine holes by the girls was Ruth Minton who finished with a net 44.
In the nine-hole (under 10) competition there was another new winner in the form of eight-year-old Scott Law who recorded a great net 31. Runner-up was last year's winner Henry Burling with a net 37.
The three-hole competition provided the younger juniors with a chance to put their practice to the test playing some par three holes and the winner was Luke Braithwaite who finished with a gross 21.
Daniel Bristow was runner-up with a gross 25.
The next junior competition is the Adopt a Junior event on September 17 when juniors and adult members play together in a greensomes stableford.
THE most difficult competition of the year - for some Broadway members - saw defending champions Tony and Jenny Holt retain the Challis Trophy.
Played for by married couples off half combined handicap on a bogey greensomes - or gruesomes as it has been renamed - format, there were reportedly no "domestics" during a most enjoyable day played in excellent weather.
Result: 1 Tony & Jenny Holt +4; 2 Tony & Joan Gisbourne +3; 3 Bob & Duane Chambers +3; 4 Pauline & Jerry O'Hagan +2; 4 Mike and Linda Everitt +2.
Mercia Castle Cup (County Stableford) - Silver Division: 1 Jenny Foxon 42pts; 2 P O'Hagan 40. Bronze Division: 1 Camilla Russell 46pts; 2 Sue Byrd 39.
