RUBERY youngsters are going back to school to face a massive education shake-up in the village.

The new two-tier system starts this term, resulting in a number of changes in the schools.

Holywell Primary School combines the former Gannow Middle and Callowbrook First, both in Gunner Lane. Work on the new school will be in phases.

Refurbishment and upgrades were due to be carried out on rooms at the Gannow site.

The art and home economics rooms were being converted into classrooms with new decoration and furniture.

The science lab is being gutted and will be converted into an information technology suite, which will be available for all to use.

Phase two is due to start this month when demolition will take place and the new key stage one block will be built. This should be completed by next spring ready for the children to move into in September next year.

There will also be work at Waseley Hills High to accommodate the extra pupils.

The re-organisation means the age of transfer to schools in the village will change from eight and 12 to seven and 11. The move will affect all schools in the Rubery pyramid, which includes Callowbrook First, Gannow Middle, Lickey First and Middle, Beaconside First and Middle and Waseley Hill High schools.
