TRAVELLERS who have set up camp in the Warndon area of Worcester are a danger to the public, it has been claimed.
A group of travellers have drawn up their caravans next to Rodborough Close and nearby householders claim they are speeding along a cycle path in cars.
"They keep driving at breakneck speed along the path and my friend was almost run over while taking her dogs for a walk," said one Warndon resident, Kim Lane.
"This area's bad enough as it is without extra worries. How long will it take to move them? I've been told the council can't do anything until they've been here 28 days."
Another resident, who did not want to be named, said he had confronted the travellers, who moved on to the land on Monday, and was told: "You're going have to put up with us because we're going to be here a lot longer than you think and there's nothing you can do about it."
One mother said she was worried about the safety of her six-year-old son.
"It looks a mess over there and I can't let my little lad out," she said.
No one from the traveller camp was willing to talk to the Evening News.
"We don't want to talk to anybody," said one man, who refused to be named. "We've had enough hassle from the police and it's not helping anybody."
A police spokeswoman said it would be up to the city council, which own the occupied land, to take action.
"Their presence is being monitored but we haven't encountered anything which requires police attention," she said.
"We've talked with Worcester City Council about a Section 77 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act to evict them.
"The landowner has to issue notices to quit and we understand the council is aware of it and have no intention of taking any further action until Friday."
No one from Worcester City Council was able to be contacted as the Evening News went to press.
But the traveller liaison officer at Worcestershire County Council said an officer had visited the site yestersday morning.
"They told us they would go within two days," said the officer.
