THERE is nothing new about the stereo surround sound system at the Regal Cinema. It was introduced for the first Cinemascope film The Robe.
There were thin magnetic strips on each side of the 35mm film perforations and there were speakers all round the auditorium. Why was the system abandoned? My guess is that either the sound was inferior to that of the optical sound strip or the magnetic strips wore out too soon.
