THIRTEEN-YEAR-Old Steve Bird is the new Wyre Forest Golf Club junior champion.
The youngster, who has been a club member since he was eight, scored 77 and 83 in the 36-hole stroke play competition.
Results: gross - Steve Bird 77 and 83 = 160 (nett 137), Paul Marchant 88 and 78 = 166 (128), Tim Price 88 and 82 = 170 (130); nett - Steve Bilboe 116 (85 and 84 = 169 gross), Dan Nuttall 122 on countback (92 and 83 = 175), Dan Wellings (junior captain) 122 (88 and 82 = 170).
The club championship was played over 36 holes over two days and was won by 20-year-old Steve Harvey, one of three assistants working at the club who hopes to start his PGA training later this year.
Results: gross - Steve Harvey 78 and 74 = 152 (142), Colin Taylor 77 and 77 = 154 (142), James Giblin 77 and 78 = 155 (145); nett - David Morris 131 (89 and 82 = 171), Steve Bird 137 on countback (78 and 82 = 163), Andrew Cook 137 (91 and 84 = 175).
Fourteen contested the ladies championship - an 18-hole stroke play event - when Val Bow retained her title by holding off the challenge of Paula Barrie to win by just one shot.
Results: gross - Val Bow 94, Paula Barrie 95, Jo Crow 101; nett - Doreen Hart 104 gross 38 handicap 66 nett, Paula Barrie 95-23-72 on countback, Ros Hayward 105-33-72.
The juniors played on Friday in the Wyre Forest Junior League against Severn Meadows, Perdiswell and Cleobury Mortimer, and regained the title Wyre Forest won in 1997.
The winning team comprised: Steve Harvey, Tim Price, Steve Bird, Lee Strank, Richard Clarke, Dan Wellings (captain).
