ALTHOUGH osteoporosis is widely considered to be a disorder affecting women, 1 in 12 men will develop the condition during their lifetime.
The National Osteoporosis Society (NOS) has produced a new booklet called Osteoporosis in Men, to offer detailed information on its causes, prevention and treatment for men with or at risk of the disease.
In nearly half of all men with osteoporosis the cause is unknown and we desperately need more research to unlock the answers. In 50 per cent of men with osteoporosis there is an underlying cause such as low levels of the male sex hormone testosterone (hypogonadism), long-term oral corticosteroid use for conditions such as asthma and Crohn's disease, and alcoholism.
If you are worried about the disease and want to find out more for you or your family, contact the NOS for a copy of Osteoporosis in Men. To order your copy of the booklet, please send a cheque made payable to the National Osteoporosis Society for £3 to the National Osteoporosis Society, PO Box 10, Radstock, Bath, BA3 3YB or by calling 01761 471771.
